Project Overview

The SVSU Wellness App was designed to enhance engagement with wellness resources for students and faculty at Saginaw Valley State University. Collaborating with the kinesiology department, I created a user-friendly app tailored to the SVSU community, addressing the accessibility and personalization gaps in existing wellness initiatives. The app offers features like personalized fitness tips, reminders, goal tracking, and workouts, empowering users to build healthier habits and prioritize their well-being. This project reflects SVSU’s commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy campus environment.

UX Research

Target Markets

75%

Primary Market

Designed with SVSU students in mind, the app provides a fun, user-friendly platform for tracking workouts, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and making wellness an integral part of their daily routine

25%

Secondary Market

The broader SVSU community and audience can benefit from the app’s resources, fostering a healthier and more active lifestyle across the entire SVSU community.

User Interviews

I conducted many user interviews across my two target markets to gain deeper insights into what users needed and desired from the app. These findings played a critical role in shaping the design and structure of the app to meet users’ needs and expectations. Conducting these interviews before starting the design process was essential, as it provides clear foundation for my work and helps prevent possible issues from arriving later in the design phase.

Conclusions from User Interviews

  • Users wanted the ability to set activity reminders

  • Ability to connect app to fitness wearables

  • Wanted the ability track custom goals the user makes

  • Users wanted to see workout tracking implemented

  • Ability to reference different professional level exercise videos

User Personas

After collecting some data from user research, I created two different personas that each represent the primary user groups for this app. These user personas helped further my understanding of the people I am designing for and the problem I am aiming to solve.

User Testing

Low Fidelity Prototyping

I utilized low-fidelity wireframes during the early stages of user testing to gather early feedback and identify design issues. By conducting these tests early, I minimized resource waste and streamlined the design process. This feedback allowed me to make targeted adjustments, ultimately enhancing usability and improving the overall user experience.

Usability Test on Low Fidelity

I arranged in-person usability testing sessions with participants from distinct user groups, conducted in a quiet space for focus. Using a link to the Figma prototype participants tested the app on while I observed their interaction with the prototype.

Conclusions from User Interviews

  • Users wanted more goal customization

  • Users wanted more clarity with navigation bar icons

  • Users needed more goal tracking feedback

  • Users wanted goals separated from the reminders

Final Design

In the final design phase of the SVSU wellness app, I incorporated the key insights gained from my usability studies to create a more user-centric experience.

High Fidelity User Testing

After finalizing my high-fidelity mockup, I conducted online unmoderated user testing to validate design choices and uncover remaining issues. Using a functional prototype with interactive elements, I combined A/B testing and usability testing to gather meaningful insights. This process allowed me to refine both design and functionality, ensuring an optimal user experience.

Conclusions from User Interviews

  • Users preferred the classic SVSU logo over a variation

  • Users wanted more clarity with navigation bar icons

  • Users needed more goal tracking feedback

  • Users wanted goals separated from the reminders

Stats & Analytics

These analytics were gathered during high-fidelity user testing sessions to evaluate the app's performance across key areas. The data highlights how effectively users navigated the app, completed tasks, and user preferences throughout about the app. These insights provide a valuable understanding of what the app does well and where the areas for improvement are, ensuring a more user focused design.

Final Thoughts

The SVSU wellness app provides a comprehensive and engaging platform for students and faculty to prioritize their health and wellness. By focusing on usability, personalization, and community-driven features, this design encourages users to adopt healthier habits in a way that feels accessible and supportive. With functionalities like goal tracking, workout guidance, and wellness tips tailored to user, the app delivers an experience that aligns with the university’s commitment to student well-being. Ultimately, the SVSU wellness app fosters a culture of health and activity, empowering users to make wellness an integral part of their daily lives.
